Acute Kidney INJURY
Acute kidney injury is defined as a rapid rise in creatine (blood test for the kidneys), or decrease urinary production and is caused by multiple causes. Rapid identification and treatment of this problem is paramount to prevent further decline in health.
Renal Medicine Associates provides care of patients who have acute decline is kidney function, care can be provided in the clinic or in hospitalized patients in most of the local hospitals in Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, Los Cruces and Roswell.
Chronic Kidney Disease Management
One of the major focuses of our practice is to focus on prevention of chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression to later stages that will lead to dialysis or kidney transplantation. Early recognition and intervention are essential to slowing disease progression, maintaining quality of life and improving outcomes.
CKD is the end results of multiple factors such as aging, uncontrolled diabetes, hypertension, kidney stones, obesity, medications that are toxic for the kidneys, etc.
Our providers apply evidenced based approach to minimize risk for further decline of kidney disease when possible.
Our group has created a CKD clinic that is led by experienced nurse practitioners, this clinic is open from Monday to Friday and its main goal is to prevent further kidney disease progression, correct abnormalities associates to CKD progression (such as anemia, hypertension, electrolyte abnormalities, etc) and prepare patients who are in latest stages of CKD to a successful transition to end stage renal therapies (dialysis or kidney transplantation).
Our clinic also provides full medical management for patients who patients who are the last stages of CKD but are not candidates or does not want to pursue dialysis or transplantation
KIDNEY AND PANCREAS TRANSPLANT
For patients suffering from renal failure, a kidney transplant can be a life- changing gift. Renal Medicine Associates under the leadership of Dr. Richard Cronin, and support of Presbyterian Hospital, started the second kidney transplant program in the state of New Mexico in, 1986.
Our program has completed more than 500 transplants since its creation. All physicians at Renal Medicine have experience in managing patients with kidney transplants, and patients with other solid organ transplants (heart, liver and pancreas).
We provide pre-transplant evaluation, living kidney donor evaluation, and lifelong medical care post kidney transplantation. KIDNEY STONE DISEASE PREVENTION
Kidney stones are one of the most painful of the urologic disorders, have beset humans for centuries. Scientists have found evidence of kidney stones in a 7,000-year-old Egyptian mummy. Unfortunately, kidney stones are one of the most common disorders of the urinary tract. Each year, people make almost 3 million visits to health care providers and more than half a million people go to emergency rooms for kidney stone problems.
Our Nephrologists provide expertise in managing kidney stone disease management by looking into the causes and prevention.
The kidneys are of the main organs that intervene in blood pressure control and most of kidney diseases can lead to high blood pressure. Uncontrolled hypertension will lead to chronic kidney disease progression, heart attacks, stroke, peripheral vascular disease, etc.
We focus on care of patients who have difficult to control hypertension (patients who are in 3 medications without achieving adequate blood pressure control), white-coat hypertension, masked-hypertension, poorly controlled hypertension, stress-related hypertension, all secondary and hormonal causes of hypertension, and hypertension complicating pregnancy
